Night of a Million Billion Zombies is a Parody of Itself

Night of a Million Billion Zombies? When I read this title I burst out laughing. Was this a joke? And then I thought to myself, “I wonder what this game is about…could it be, zombies?” And I understand that this is laced with sarcasm, but honestly, who are they kidding? And that is just the kind of person I am. Sarcastic.

But as I continue to delve deeper into the world of zombies, I realize that they are probably making fun of themselves. The graphics are pretty lame, there is no second layer to the plot of the game, and it is clear the developers have not gone above and beyond to bring the game to a unique level.

It is clear that they are just following the popularity of zombie movies lately. Leading a posse of survivors through a zombie-infested city? Sounds to me like the plot of every teen horror flick in the theatres in the past 12 months.

And while it is fabulous that the character of the game is able to use an array of weapons to kill these zombies, such as chainsaws, Molotov cocktails, and submachine guns, that really is not doing it for me. I like a little originality to my games, and this game is most definitely not doing it for me.

“New” Super Mario Bros?

“New Power-Ups. New Moves. New Bosses. Welcome to the new Mushroom Kingdom.” Is anyone else starting to feel a big money-grabbing cash scam? I have been playing Mario ever since I was a small child and I have to say, the Italian hasn’t changed all that much.

And oh my goodness. Do not even get me started on Princess Peach. If there were any character signifying the awful portrayal of women in pop culture, she would be it. She is needy, whiny, pathetic, and has been getting herself into awful situations for the past 20 years. For goodness sakes, woman, take control of your life! Why must you always have to be rescued by this guy? But that’s just my opinion…

I’ve checked out the screenshots, and it all looks pretty standard to me. You get the mushroom, you get big, you get the flower, you get fireballs, you get the star, you’re temporarily invincible, you go through the tubes to get to another world, etc. There isn’t anything jumping out at me. But I suppose I should go through this in more detail….

In world one, you must go through water and land obstacles before reaching the castle. Small bonus: jump up walls using a new technique. In world two, you’re in a desert landscape, but must get through the sewers for a large portion of the level. Keep an eye out for a secret jump to world four! In world three, you’re in the tropics. This level mainly consists of swimming in the water or trying to stay out of the water. In world four, race through the forest before being halted in your tracks by a lovely ghost house with no obvious exit. Sounds like that will take more than one try…

By world five, you will find yourself in an arctic landscape, now faced with the challenge of dodging snowballs and avalanches, as well as sliding down ice cliffs safely. Finally, world six is a mountainous terrain, so clearly your biggest worry will be falling off the cliffs. You will face two challenging towers compared to the previous level’s one, as well as try and negotiate some slippery surfaces…

Okay, I will admit that this sounds intriguing now. But this is what they are after. Nintendo has been milking this cash cow for as long as they’ve been around, and honestly, I think it is getting ridiculous. If you are out of ideas for Mario and the gang, then please Nintendo, come up with something new, I beg you.

Supreme Ruler 2020: Can you do a better job than Bush?

Can you do a better job than Bush? We already know the answer to this: yes. But what if you were to get your country into the middle of a war fuelled by oil and an obsession with control? This is what Supreme Ruler 2020 is asking.

As economies and nations are crumbling around you, it is your job to save your country from destruction. But how, you ask? Why, the only way we know how, of course! By killing everyone around us.

But I shouldn’t knock it too badly, because this is all this game is about. Ruling over a nation (sounds like a dictator but, whatever), building a crazy military (while ignoring the poverty and suffering in your own country) and ruling the world (or attempting to, anyways).

Hopefully you will have more luck in completing your mission than the U.S. is right now. I am all for action/adventure games but this is just a bit too close to home for me. I don’t like what is going on in the world right now, and especially what is going on in the U.S., so this game just does not sit right with me. But, like I said, if you do opt for this war game, I hope you have better luck at trying to rule the world than Bush is having!

EA Teams with Hasbro to make Monopoly Tech-Savvy

What a brilliant idea to bring Monopoly, the classic board game, onto computers and TVs everywhere. In my experience, board games are on their way out. Nobody ever wants to play them with me anymore. But that could just be me….

Anyways, creating this multiplayer game is a brilliant and simple way to introduce the game and brand to a completely different demographic. When playing multi-player, or just on your own if still nobody will play with you, its going to be a blast.

There is no set release date quite yet, but since it was just announced yesterday I suppose we should give them some time. The game promises to be very interactive, colourful, and with some surprises up their sleeve, I doubt EA will disappoint.

These are my guys who brought us The Sims, so I know they will do an excellent job. I think it was a great move to tap into a new market of fans. Those young kids who are hooked on computer games have most likely never played Monopoly, and this, in my opinion, is a travesty. It is one of my favourite games and I am very much looking forward to its release.

Manhunt 2: Turning our Children into Suicidal Maniacs?

The Video Appeals Committee has finally got the answer they were looking for: that the BBFC’s decision was flawed in banning Manhunt 2 from retailers across the UK. There have never been any conclusive studies done to prove that there is a link between violence and video games.

If you’ve read any of my posts, you know I’m pleased that the High Court recognizes that there is no correlation between games and actions we take in our REAL lives.

This decision comes nine months after the original denial by BBFC. This signifies a lot of losses for Rockstar, the creator of Manhunt 2. If I was them, I would be very unhappy, especially since this ruling was made under false information of which there is no proof.

The way I see it, to essentially ban violent games, it must be done at the source: the video game companies. If we don’t want violence in our games, the producers must be told to stop, or there should be laws in place. The boys in power should not just go around shutting games down that they don’t like the look of; that hardly seems fair to me.

Not that I’m saying that would ever happen. The game companies would go ballistic, because let’s face it, these brutal, bloodthirsty games are the money makers. And that’s probably what’s worrying the people in power….

It just seems like censorship gone too far. People are going to play these games whether the government likes it or not, and that’s just the way it is. There’s always going to be two psychologists in front of a jury: one saying these games are turning our children into homicidal maniacs, and the other saying they are just fun and have no effect on our psyches.

And there lies the problem: not everyone is going to agree, and they never will. I say just let the people do what they want, because they’re going to whether you say they can or not. I just don’t want to see anyone else bringing forward the “video games made me do it” defense, or this mess will start all over again.

Perfect World: A Thing of Beauty

The quest based ‘Perfect World’ is such an interesting, mystical game because it has such a neat background story. It is not just made up on the spot, but is based on an old Chinese myth that Pangu, a Chinese ancestor, built the sky, the land and humans. The game creates a particularly historical atmosphere and brings players into an age-old, mysterious and previously undiscovered world with an epic background and extravagant story contents.

Completing quests is particularly my favorite part of the game. To get into the shoes of your character, which can be specifically created by you with the beautiful graphics of the game, and complete tasks as though you are living the life of the character is completely fulfilling.

As you advance in the levels there is more and more community play required, which can be enjoyable but can also lead to problems since this is a Chinese made game and the people participating are playing from around the world. Obstacles such as language barriers can be a problem when you are involved in online group play.

I enjoy the character creations and the personal conquests the game can provide you through the early levels, but since there 100+ levels, those going on further are mostly hard-core gamers. The stunning visuals are enough to draw anyone in for a little peek, though.
